The Discipline To Lead

Standing At The Cutting Edge Of The Finance Industry with Joy Mbanugo

Joy Mbanugo is the go-to market finance infrastructure expert and implements systems to prepare companies to go public. She has worked in finance for 19 years with companies such as Ernst and Young, Google, and Blackrock.

Mbanugo is a swiss army knife in the financial space, she built her career in both professional and modern strategic services. With over 20 years in accounting and tax services, she is now offering her vast skill set to join a board of a privately-owned company, startup or public board.

Luckily today we were able to get Mbanugo out of the boardroom and convince her to share her wisdom with SHE readers.

Mbanugo is ready to tell us all what it takes to live the life of a mogul at the cutting edge of industry.

A Vision For Billions

Moguls like Mbanugo don’t have time to squabble over a few dollars because they’re thinking on a higher level.

Mbanugo’s work at Google Finance had results over $100 billion, that means Cardi B. is not the only one making money moves around here.

In fact many celebrities with an eye for big financial wins are focusing in the exact same places as Mbanugo, blockchain technology and its mainy implications.

Powerful women like Mbanugo aren’t sitting back and letting crypto become the latest boys club. Reese Witherspoon, Mila Kunis, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Paris Hilton have all recently come out to advocate for more women to be shaping the future of digital finance.

Gwyneth Paltrow was quoted saying, “We deserve to be in that space just as much.”

However, no matter how many women from Mila Kunis to Joy Mbanugo tell us that the future of crypto is real, it’s on us as women to develop the future of finance before it’s too late.

A Curated Network

Joy Mbanugo is not shy about saying, “ My audience is on LinkedIn.” She doesn’t have time to not be taken seriously, so she leaves TikTok and Instagram for fun and creativity.

Her work has led her to London and Hong Kong where she’s made connections on a global scale.

That network of serious professionals and business owners ushered Mbanugo to the intersection of cloud technology, crypto, and the metaverse and yes ladies, it’s time you know what all of those things are!

If no one in your personal network is talking about these cutting edge concepts, it might be time for you to branch out. Join some new networking groups, take additional courses, or explore opportunities in your local community. Because, no matter how far her career takes her Mbanugo focuses on personal development.

Most recently, she’s been participating in a seminar called “How Women Lead '' which prepares women for private and public board seats. She also invested as Limited Partner in How Women Invest Fund II and as an Angel Investor in other ventures.

How have you been spending your spare time?

A Commitment to Being of Service

We at SHE love to see power in the hands of those who want to use it for good.

Mbanugo can and has helped companies multiply their fortunes but she does it with an eye on her ethics and the values she learned from her family and her education.

She currently serves as the CFO at Paladin, a nonprofit organization that supports underserved startup founders to better structure their respective companies.

She has seen, firsthand, underprepared companies see immense growth, only to fail because vital systems were not in place, like financial reporting and operations efficiency.

Her work protects founders from watching the demise of the companies they’ve sacrificed for.

Control At Home

In a life like Mbanugo’s, it all comes down to discipline. The discipline to study, grow, and create wealth for herself and others. In order to succeed that discipline has to encompass all things, including her homelife.

Motherhood is hard and yes Mbanugo is a mother too, but in her house her husband affectionately calls her, ‘Tiny General,” as he lovingly cradles their young son in his arms.

To a woman like Mbanugo who’s driven to the cutting edge of industry, having her husband recognize her as a Tiny General is a great honor. It means the discipline she’s cultivated in her professional life keeps her home calm and organized too. Striving for extraordinary extends to all things.

A Past To Be Proud Of

This is the hard one, because our past so often shapes our futures and it’s the one thing we can’t change.

For women like Mbanugo it’s the history of going the extra mile that defines them.

During her college years, Mbanugo’s mother encouraged her to attend law school and that discipline led her to simultaneously pursue the fields of investing, finance and accounting to honor her grandmother’s passions as well as her mother’s. Still she honored her own calling by getting a subsequent degree in Black World Studies. Talk about a history of going the extra mile!

After college Mbanugo, formerly Harper, produced a laundry list of achievements for numerous big-name companies, including leading the treasury tax and streamline cash management initiatives at Google Finance, which resulted in over $100 billion.

Additionally, she is the head of partnership finance and industry solutions at Google Cloud, a team that assesses cross-functional deals and evaluates partnerships. In fact, she also worked on the largest U.S. ERP to ERP transformation.

If your past is not as shiny as Mbanugos that’s okay!

Start taking small steps towards the life of your dreams.

Cultivate your vision for billions by being the first woman in your network with a cryptocurrency wallet, or build up your resume with an accounting class.

If those steps feel too big then maybe it’s time to explore building structure and discipline into your homelife or your Linkedin presence.
